Meeting the basic needs of poor families in Honduras, while spreading the love of Jesus Christ

GevanHOW WE STARTED

On June 23, 2006 a diverse group of 21 people, ranging from 10 to 70 years of age traveled to central America to the little town of Valle de Angeles, Honduras. Approximately one hour's drive east of the capital city of Tegucigalpa, the town is beautifully set in a high mountain valley at 1,300 meters, surrounded by mountains on three sides and overlooking the Valley of Angels. It was our “inaugural” medical mission trip and we worked in collaboration with the local evangelical church (Ministerios Vision Cristiana), the Catholic Church (St. Francis of Assisi), the town civil association, the local medical clinic and orphanage La Finca. Our team represented 6 churches from New York, Pennsylvania and Florida and consisted of a pediatrician, a Physician’s assistant, and an RN. We saw approximately 300 patients over the course of four days. We treated patients young and old at the town clinic, the local school, and another school in a poorer section of the mountains. Some of the team members assisted with the pharmacy, giving out medications and taking care of patients. Others distributed clothing, toys, toothbrushes and other supplies.

There were many opportunities to love and pray for people. In addition to the medical outreach some members of our team worked on a building project, while others assisted unwed mothers teaching them practical skills such as crocheting. One evening we showed the Jesus film in the town cultural center. For many it was the first time they had ever seen and heard the message of salvation in their own language. We had the opportunity to pray with and minister to several of them. We also had the opportunity to minister at the local evangelical church (Vision Cristiana) with music, testimonies, and with prayer through the laying on of hands.

During the course of the week we also had some time for recreation. We visited the ancient city of Copan, home to many of the most amazing Mayan ruins. It was a wonderful trip and every year since we try to do something similar.

Since our first visit in 2006 this trip has become an annual event and each team is blessed with many new Amigos. We always look forward to seeing how God brings us together to use each member's skills and talents in such a compatible way, and we always come home more blessed than those we serve in the beautiful country of Honduras.
